An Indigenous Advisory Board (IAB) is being established within the Occasions of Care Explained and ANalysed (OCEAN) study, to provide cultural guidance, community leadership and oversight of the OCEAN study throughout the funded data collection period (up until July 2027). All members of the IAB must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Membership to the IAB is voluntary and open to nominations from individuals and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations (e.g. AMSs, ACCHSs, etc.). The IAB allows community members with cultural authority within their communities to provide advice to the OCEAN Indigenous Data Sovereignty Group (IDSG) and the OCEAN team to ensure the study’s data and outputs are aligned to the local needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities at the grassroots level.

The Occasions of Care Explained and Analysed (OCEAN) study is a national research study which seeks to investigate multidisciplinary care in general practices, Aboriginal Medical Services (AMSs) and Aboriginal Community-controlled Health Services (ACCHSs). OCEAN is a three-year initiative commissioned by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, led by the University of Sydney in collaboration with the University of Wollongong (UoW) and the National Association of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners (NAATSIHWP), and supported by the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO). A central priority of this study is Indigenous Data Sovereignty and governance, ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have control and ownership over their data for the benefit of their local communities and organisations.
