The OCEAN Study

Wave 3: The Encounter Data

Study overview

The OCEAN study, funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, comprises three ‘waves’ of data collection across four health professional ‘streams’ (for general practice nurses, nurse practitioners, physiotherapists and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners).

A random sample of GPNs who completed the Professional Profile will be asked to collect Patient Encounter data. For each GPN this comprises completion of an encounter form for each of 100 consecutive patient encounters (equalling 100 encounter forms in total).

The time commitment will vary but through the pilot study, nurses reported getting quicker at completing encounter forms the more that they did. Some encounters are very quick to record; patients who are more complex may take longer. However, recording consecutive encounters is important to provide an accurate overview of GPN work.
